{"id":1762,"date":"2015-11-28T23:43:23","date_gmt":"2015-11-29T06:43:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/docmuscles.com\/?p=1762"},"modified":"2023-11-02T08:46:31","modified_gmt":"2023-11-02T15:46:31","slug":"common-ketosis-killers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.docmuscles.com\/common-ketosis-killers\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Ketosis Killers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve tried your low-carb diet, Dr. Nally, and it didn&#8217;t work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hmm . . . really?&#8221; \u00a0If you&#8217;re mumbling this to yourself, or you&#8217;ve said it to me in my office, then lets have a little talk.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve probably been subjected to the common ketosis killers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docmuscles.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/scale-help.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1786\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"1786\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.docmuscles.com\/common-ketosis-killers\/scale-help\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/scale-help.jpg?fit=475%2C315&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"475,315\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Scale Help\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/scale-help.jpg?fit=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/scale-help.jpg?fit=475%2C315&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1786\" src=\"https:\/\/docmuscles.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/scale-help.jpg?resize=475%2C315\" alt=\"Scale Help\" width=\"475\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/scale-help.jpg?w=475&amp;ssl=1 475w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/scale-help.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve heard this statement before. \u00a0It&#8217;s not a new statement, but it&#8217;s a statement that tells me we need to address a number of items. \u00a0If you&#8217;ve failed a low carbohydrate diet, I&#8217;d suspect you are pretty severely insulin resistant or <a href=\"http:\/\/docmuscles.com\/2015\/11\/23\/diabetes-mellitus-really-the-fourth-stage-of-insulin-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hyperinsulinemic<\/a>. \u00a0You probably never really reached true ketosis. \u00a0 I&#8217;d want to have you checked out by your doctor to rule out underlying disease like hypothyroidism, diabetes, other hormone imbalance, etc.<\/p>\n<h3>Nutritional Ketosis is Most Effective as a Lifestyle Change<\/h3>\n<p>Next, switching to a low-carbohydrate lifestyle is literally a &#8220;lifestyle change.&#8221; \u00a0It requires that you understand a few <a href=\"http:\/\/docmuscles.com\/2015\/10\/06\/the-principle-based-ketogenic-lifestyle-part-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">basic ketosis principles<\/a>. \u00a0And, it takes the average person 3-6 months to really wrap their head around what this lifestyle means . . . \u00a0and, some people, up to a year before they are really comfortable with how to eat and function in any situation.<\/p>\n<p>I assume, if you are reading this article, that you&#8217;ve already read about ketosis and understand the science behind it. \u00a0If not, please start your reading with my article <em><a href=\"http:\/\/docmuscles.com\/2015\/10\/06\/the-principle-based-ketogenic-lifestyle-part-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Principle Based Ketogenic Lifestyle &#8211; Part I<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/docmuscles.com\/2015\/10\/15\/ketogenic-principles-part-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ketogenic Principles &#8211; Part II<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0If this is the case, then please proceed forward, &#8220;full steam ahead!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are usually a few areas that are inadvertently inhibiting your body transformation, so let&#8217;s get a little personal.<\/p>\n<h3>Nutritional Ketosis is a Very Low Carbohydrate Diet<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>First<\/strong><\/span>, this is a<em><strong> low carbohydrate<\/strong><\/em> diet. \u00a0For weight loss, I usually ask people to lower their carbohydrate intake to less than 2o grams per day. How do you do that? \u00a0(A copy of my diet is accessible through my membership site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docmuscles.com\/membership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a>.) \u00a0You&#8217;ve got to begin by restricting all carbohydrates to less than 20 grams per day. \u00a0Any more than 20 to 30 grams per day will cause an insulin release from the pancreas and stimulate fat storage of both carbohydrate and fat for the next 10-12 hours, commonly killing ketosis. \u00a0Keep a dietary journal to record your progress, your cravings, your successes and failures. \u00a0I&#8217;m going to want to see it and review it with you if you see me.<\/p>\n<p>No, I don&#8217;t believe in &#8220;Net Carbs.&#8221; \u00a0Net Carbs are a sales gimmick to get you to buy &#8220;artificial food&#8221; that keeps you coming back for &#8220;artificial food&#8221; and halts your weight loss (you&#8217;ll see why shortly). \u00a0 You&#8217;re going to lose the most weight and feel your best when you <strong>eat real food<\/strong>. I do allow for the subtraction of real fiber, specifically non-cooked, non-blended, non-juiced leafy greens (If you cook, blend or juice a leafy green, it activates more carbohydrate availability). \u00a0Leafy greens are real fiber. \u00a0You can subtract them. \u00a0In fact, I recommend eating 1-3 cups of leafy greens per day to help bowel function &amp; provide necessary folic acid, but, everything else is &#8220;carbage.&#8221; \u00a0Avoid it.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, cottage cheese and yogurt contain carbohydrates. \u00a0Be very cautious with them.<\/p>\n<p>No, oatmeal and Cream of Wheat\u2122 are not helpful. However, so many of my patients don&#8217;t eat enough protein that they feel like it is a &#8220;high protein diet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Protein is essential for the building and maintaining of muscle, connective tissue and a number of other enzymatic reactions in your body. \u00a0However, in patients who are morbidly obese [people with a body mass index (BMI) over 50], excess protein intake can cause fat to be stored by producing an excessive insulin response.\u00a0 In these patients we initially moderate protein.\u00a0 Excess sugars and a number of proteins, in the presence of a high insulin response, are converted to triglyceride (the soft squishy stuff inside the fat cells that make them plump) and stocked away inside your adipose tissue.\u00a0 Excessive protein, especially the amino acids argenine, leucine and tryptophan are common ketosis killers, not because they are converted to sugar, but because they stimulate and insulin response all by themselves.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t fall into the morbidly obese category (BMI over 50). Then, I encourage you to use the protein levels below.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, I ask my patients to focus on lowering their carbohydrate intake and I don&#8217;t really worry about protein. \u00a0(It is often hard enough to figure out what the difference between a carbohydrate and a protein in the first month or two if you&#8217;ve never had any nutrition background.) \u00a0Most people begin losing weight just by lowering carbohydrates over the first few months. \u00a0Once you figure out how to lower your carbohydrates, if your weight loss is not moving and your pants are not getting looser, then you&#8217;re probably eating too much protein.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much protein do you need?<\/strong>\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty easy to calculate and is based on your height and gender.\u00a0 Your basic protein needs to maintain muscle, skin and hair growth are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>70 grams or higher for women per day<\/li>\n<li>120 grams or higher for men per day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, these levels are WAY TOO LOW for weight loss and maintaining good health.\u00a0 Because we now know that protein acts as a hormone in a number of ways, in my office I recommend women get 80-90 grams of protein per day, and men should get &gt; 150 grams of protein per day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docmuscles.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/protein.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1790\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"1790\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.docmuscles.com\/common-ketosis-killers\/protein\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/protein.jpg?fit=372%2C226&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"372,226\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Protein\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/protein.jpg?fit=300%2C182&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/protein.jpg?fit=372%2C226&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1790\" src=\"https:\/\/docmuscles.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/protein.jpg?resize=372%2C226\" alt=\"Protein\" width=\"372\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/protein.jpg?w=372&amp;ssl=1 372w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.docmuscles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/protein.jpg?resize=300%2C182&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/a>If you&#8217;re still a little confused about protein, read my article on <em><a href=\"http:\/\/docmuscles.com\/2015\/03\/27\/why-does-your-chicken-salad-stop-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Why Your Chicken Salad Stops Your Weight Loss<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This also goes for protein powders and protein shakes. \u00a0Many of these have 25-40 grams of protein in them per serving, so be careful with their use.<\/p>\n<h3>Nutritional Ketosis is a High Fat Diet<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Third<\/strong><\/span>, this is a <em><strong>high fat lifestyle<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0Yes, I want you to INCREASE your fat intake. \u00a0I&#8217;m going to repeat that, again, just for<em> clarity, . . . .\u00a0<\/em>INCREASE your fat intake. \u00a0Increase it to around 50% of your total calories, . . . 70% of your total calories if you can do it.\u00a0 Not enough fat is a common ketosis killer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What?! Won&#8217;t that cause heart disease and stroke and make my cholesterol worse?!!!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I know, take a big deep breath . . . (you may even need to breath into a paper bag for a minute if you begin hyperventilating).<\/p>\n<p>No, it will not raise your cholesterol, cause heart disease, or cause a stroke. \u00a0If you have lowered your carbohydrate intake to less than 20 grams per day, then there is NO hormonal signal for you to make more bad cholesterol, worsen heart disease, or cause a stroke. \u00a0In fact, there is <a href=\"http:\/\/circ.ahajournals.org\/content\/121\/10\/1200.long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">great data<\/a> showing that increasing your fat and lowering your carbohydrates reverses the blockage in the arteries. \u00a0I see this reversal every single day in my clinic through the application of ketogenic diets.<\/p>\n<p><a should be fat. \u00a0Protein must be moderated, as it will also be\u00a0stored as fat if you eat too much. \u00a0So, if the carbohydrates are kept low, fat intake can be increased and the body will pick the fat it wants and essentially throw the rest out without raising cholesterol, causing weight gain or causing heart disease. \u00a0This is why we want you to use good natural animal fats like butter, hard cheese, olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, etc. \u00a0Look for fats highest in omega-3 fatty acids as these decrease inflammation and improved weight loss. \u00a0Look for meats highest in fat like red meat (55% fat) and pork (45% fat). \u00a0Take the food pyramid and flip it over.<\/p>\n<h3>Check Your Sweeteners At the Door<\/h3>\n<p>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>fourth<\/strong><\/span> common ketosis killer and culprit in halting your weight loss is\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>artificial sweeteners<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0There are quite a few of them. \u00a0Most of them WILL cause an insulin response (exactly what we don&#8217;t want for weight loss) with minimal to no rise in blood sugar. \u00a0Raising blood sugar doesn&#8217;t matter, if the insulin is being stimulated \u00a0. . . &#8220;you&#8217;re gonna gain weight for the next 10-12 hours.&#8221; \u00a0I wrote an article for you to print off and hang on your fridge, upload it to your iPhone or carry it with you in your purse to the grocery store. The most common is lack of sleep. \u00a0You can read about stress and ways to address it in two of my articles: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/docmuscles.com\/2014\/06\/07\/how-does-stress-cause-weight-gain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Does Stress Cause Weight Gain?<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/docmuscles.com\/2015\/11\/25\/adrenal-insufficiency-adrenal-fatigue-pseudocushings-syndrome-oh-my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adrenal Insufficiency, Adrenal Fatigue and PseudoCushing&#8217;s Syndrome &#8211; Oh My<\/a>!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For many years, we&#8217;ve thought that <em><strong>caffeine<\/strong><\/em> was great for weight loss. \u00a0However, we are finding, clinically, that too much caffeine can also cause a stress response by raising cortisol, releasing glycogen, thereby stimulating an insulin response and bringing your weight loss to a screeching halt. \u00a0How much caffeine? . . .
