What is a Myer’s Cocktail?

The origins of the Myers’ Cocktail can be traced back to Dr. John Myers, who pioneered IV nutrient therapy.  He found it helpful in treating all sorts of ailments in his patients. After his death in the 1980s, Dr. Alan Gaby continued his work, refining the ingredients and dosages of the treatment and naming it the Myers’ Cocktail in honor of Dr. Myers.

Over the years, the vitamin-infused cocktail has grown more popular.  The special mixture is a unique blend of essential vitamins and minerals, and it offers higher concentrations of nutrients to be absorbed into the body, considered significantly more effective than oral supplements. The primary ingredients in a Myers’ Cocktail include B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium, and magnesium.

Common Ingredients in the Myers Cocktail

The basic Myers cocktail consists of a mixture of vitamins, minerals and amino acids administered together by intravenous injection. While exact formulations can vary, these are the most common ingredients included:
  • Vitamin C – The baseline Myers cocktail typically includes at least 1 gram of vitamin C. Higher doses of 5-15 grams may be given. Vitamin C provides antioxidant effects and is needed for numerous biochemical reactions.
  • B-complex vitamins – This includes B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B6 (pyridoxine). These B-vitamins help convert food into cellular energy and are required for proper nervous system functioning.
  • Vitamin B12 – Often given as 1,000 mcg of methylcobalamin or hydroxocobalamin for enhanced energy production and red blood cell formation.
  • Magnesium – Doses of magnesium are typically 1-2 grams. Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body and plays roles in muscle, nerve, heart health, immune function, and energy production.
  • Calcium – Usually given as 200-500 mg, along with the magnesium to help regulate smooth muscle contractions and normalize nerve transmission.
  • Potassium – Potassium is an essential electrolyte, with doses around 100-200 mg to maintain fluid balance. Some formulations omit potassium due to risks in certain patients.
  • Glutathione – This antioxidant and detoxifying agent may be included at doses around 600-1200 mg.
  • Amino acids – Certain amino acid mixtures may be added, including glycine, taurine, L-carnitine, L-arginine, L-cysteine, and others. These serve as building blocks for proteins and neurotransimitters.
The saline solution used to deliver the ingredients may also contain small amounts of other minerals like zinc or selenium. While the exact ingredients used can vary, the core components listed above appear consistently in most Myers cocktail recipes.
