Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when I’m in Ketosis?

There are several ways to know if you are in ketosis. You can test urine, breath and blood, but I recommend testing blood. The most accurate is to use the Precision Xtra ketone monitor by Abbott. You can find it here.

Why Am I Hungry?

You get hungry for 4 three simple reasons:

  • You need fuel. Ketones or glucose levels drop (You didn’t eat enough fat at your last meal, or you ate too much carbohydrate or protein and you had an insulin spike causing rebound lower blood sugar 2-3 hours after the meal causing hunger to kick in.)
  • You are bored. Mastication (the fancy word for chewing) is a release from the boredom for many people. Mastication can actually be habitual and causes a perceived hunger and a habit loop.
  • You are stressed. Stress stimulates craving hormones which are often temporarily relieved by eating. (Another thing that can cause a habit loop)
  • You are thirsty. Thirst is often misinterpreted as hunger. Drink a full 8oz glass of water every time you feel hungry to help hydrate the body before you eat.

Make sure you are using a good salt replacement like Himalayan Pink Sea Salt .

Why am I thirsty on a Ketogenic diet?

When your body is in ketosis, you burn fat and you lose both salt and water, both of which are very important to replace. Drink a full 8oz of water every time you are hungry before you eat AND make sure you are drinking at least 64oz a day at a minimum to keep your body healthy and add in these supplements to keep you at optimum health.

Does Caffeine make you hungry?

2 to 4 drinks of caffeine per day will actually help you to lose weight. Drinking excess caffeine (more than a 100 grams every 4 to 6 hours) will actually cause weight gain and make you hungry because of the stress response due to caffeine. (2 cups of coffee + 2 Keto O/S packets/day = weight loss)

What should you eat if you’re not really hungry but you want a snack?

First, drink 8oz of water and see if that works. If you just have the munchies, eat high fat foods like Pork Rinds, Fat Bombs, Cheese (any kind of real cheese), red meat like Pepperoni, Bologna or hotdogs (without the bun of course), handful of nuts like: Almonds or Walnuts. Etc.
Other things that you can eat when you want a snacks will be: boiled eggs, Sardines, Oysters, Skipper snacks, (70 to 80 percent fats are best)

How do you satisfy a sweet cravings?

The first step is prevention by eating enough fat in the meal prior. Add butter to your meal (not bread! ☺) Sweet cravings means you ate too much protein and not enough fat. I Highly Recommend… Fat Bombs!
